The Myth of Economic Development Results in Democractic Development

I always thought the concept of economic development will necessarily lead to democracy/liberty a fallacy.  One has to only look at some Asian countries such as Singapore and others that have suffered failure in democratic system to realize it.  Or even further back to the authoritarian empires of the past that have extensive economic powers.  South Korea and Taiwan is the only two that come close as being successful example of this theory.  But in my opinion, these two countries are exceptions, not the norms.  They are exception due to their unique background and circumstances.

Apparently, a lot of big thinkers also discuss and study this topic extensively and come to the similar conclusion: that this concept is more of a myth.  Here is a very good article, that explain the idea 100 times better than me.
